Des Plaines Conservation Area
There is an excellent trail riding area in Wilmington, Illinois at the Des Plaines Conservation Area. Address is 24621 N. River Road, Wilmington, Illinois 60481. 815-423-5326. It has twelve miles on 4 different loops. On two loops thay are developing a series of cross country jumps in conjunction with the trail system. They are all optional and none are higher than training level. They have English/Western area where you can work in a dressage arena, on Western pleasure activities, on jumping, or on "aggravation" work. There are jump standards, ground poles, cavaletti, tires, and other paraphernalia whose use is only limited by your imagination and inventiveness. If you want to work in an enclosed area, they have a 60' round pen. For shows and training sessions they have a large corral. And it is all within 100' of where you park your trailer at the trailhead. All this on I-55 just 8 miles south of I-80 so it is convenient and very accessible. There are trails at Glacier Ridge Park in McHerny County. The park is just southeast of Richmond, IL.

The George S. Mickelson Trail in South Dakota - It is a beautiful Rails to Trails conversion in the Middle of the Black Hills of SD. It is 114 miles long and runs from Deadwood, SD to Edgemont, SD. www.mickelsontrailaffiliates.com
